Your own body becomes a resonance chamber

Basic tuning: G - but can also be tuned to E or F

The Ko-ta-mo is a mixture of three different instruments: Koto, tambura and monochord. The monochord goes back to Pythagoras and is therefore of European origin, the tambura is an Indian accompanying instrument and the koto is a Japanese melody instrument. It is therefore a truly multi-cultural instrument.

Kotamo therapy belongs to the family of body sound instruments. These are instruments that are placed on the body (back or stomach) or on which you lie (sound couch) or sit (sound chair). The sound or vibration is therefore not only picked up by the ears but also transmitted directly through the instrument to the body.

There is a person who plays and a person who is "played". Although you can lay a Kotamo on your stomach and "play" yourself, it is of course more pleasant and more intense when someone else plays for you.

Sound

The monochord, koto and tambura are on the same playing side. If you run your fingers over the string level of the monochord tuned to one note, a very wide, overtone-rich and surprisingly deep sound unfolds.

Next to it are eleven strings, four of which form the tambura and seven the koto. The tambura is tuned to the same note as the monochord, which is tuned to G, and has an additional string tuned in fifths (G g g D). The four strings run over a "snare bridge", which produces the typical buzzing and mystical sound that is also known from the Indian sitar. The fourteen strings of the koto can be tuned as desired using movable wooden riders. This allows you to experiment with very different scales and experience moods in the truest sense of the word. You can set diatonic, pentatonic, Indian or Japanese tunings, just as you like. Or you can set up the riders according to your own mood and find out which tuning you are currently in.

The fact that all the strings vibrate at the same time creates a pleasantly sparkling sound rich in overtones, reminiscent of a babbling brook or the gentle sound of waves. The effect of the sound is generally described as stimulating, uplifting and at the same time relaxing. The sound can also help to relieve tension and lead to an increased awareness of one's own body. In particular, it can be observed that breathing becomes deeper and calmer after just a few seconds.
