One's own body becomes a resonance chamber

The Ko-ta-mo is a mixture of three different instruments: Koto, Tambura and Monochord. The monochord goes back to Pythagoras and is therefore of European origin, the tambura is an Indian accompanying instrument and the koto is a Japanese melody instrument. It is therefore a true multi-culti instrument.

The therapy kotamo belongs to the family of body sound instruments. These are instruments that are placed on the body (back or belly) or on which one lies down (sound couch) or sits (sound chair). The sound or vibration is therefore not only received through the ears but also transmitted directly through the instrument to the body.

There is a person who plays, and a person who is "played". Although you can put a Therapy Kotamo on your belly and "play" yourself, it is of course more pleasant and intense when someone else plays for you.

Soundscape

The monochord, koto and tambura are on the same playing side. If one strokes with the fingers over the string level of the monochord tuned to one tone, a very wide, overtone-rich and amazingly deep sound unfolds.

Next to it there are eleven strings, four of which form the tambura and seven the koto. The tambura is tuned to the same tone as the monochord, which can be tuned in C or D, and has an additional string in fifths tuning (C c c G). The four strings run over a "snare bridge" which produces the typical buzzing and mystical sound also known from the Indian sitar. The fourteen strings of the Koto can be tuned in any way by means of movable wooden sliders. So you can experiment with very different scales and experience moods in the truest sense of the word. You can set diatonic, pentatonic, Indian or Japanese tunings, just as you like. Or you can set up the riders according to your own emotional state and thereby experience in which tuning you are at the moment.

The fact that all the strings are set in vibration at the same time creates a pleasantly pearly sound, very rich in overtones, reminiscent of a babbling brook or the gentle murmur of waves. The effect of the sound is usually described as stimulating, uplifting and at the same time relaxing. In addition, the sound can help to relieve tension and lead to an increased awareness of one's own body. In particular, it can be observed that after just a few seconds, breathing becomes deeper and calmer.
