Drum with a deep sound, comparable to the bass drum or tom of a battery, which is played with a mallet held by one hand while the other is used to muffle the sound, creating the syncopated rhythm of the samba, sometimes with two mallets. The surdo is the basic breath of the samba. It generally occurs in three sizes in the batucada.
