This intense, shimmering sound fascinated and inspired Western musicians such as Claude Debussy and Erik Satie. Satie heard a Javanese gamelan orchestra play for the first time at the Paris World Exhibition in 1889 and used its hypnotic effect in his exotic work Gnossienne.
