Beschreibung

Schumann resonance (named after the German physicist and electrical engineer Winfried Otto Schumann) refers to the phenomenon that electromagnetic waves of certain frequencies form standing waves along the circumference of the earth. The sufficiently conductive surface of the earth (mostly salt water) and the highly conductive ionosphere above it delimit a spherical shell-shaped cavity resonator, the dimensions of which can be used to calculate possible resonance frequencies. Waves that are in the same phase again after orbiting the earth (i.e. the circumference of the earth is an integer multiple of the wavelength) are amplified, while others are canceled out. This results in a lowest resonance frequency of around 7.8 Hz on average. This tuning fork transmits the Schumann frequency into the audible range by "octaving" it five times. This results in a frequency of 250.65 Hz.
