Udu drums originate from the Igbo (Ibo) in south-eastern Nigeria. It is an ancient instrument that has developed into a popular percussion instrument. In Igbo country there are two versions of udus, the one with a side hole was played by women. The other version is much larger and only has a wide opening at the top. The udu, which developed from the village communities, was used in music orchestras, accompanied by female dancers, and in storytelling with songs.
