The Middle Ages, the 700-year-long "Dark Ages" between the Roman Empire and the beginning of the modern era, had numerous facets in which colorful artistic life existed alongside its darker sides. People sang, danced and celebrated not only at court, but also in the cities and in the countryside. In the monasteries, various forms of vocal polyphony developed from the monophonic Gregorian chant. The musicians of the Middle Ages were either court musicians or wandering journeymen who set up camp wherever their services were convenient.
