C major pentatonic (C3-C4)
The design of our harp is based on a group of instruments called "plosive aerophones". To play a plosive aerophone, you simply strike the end of a long tube (traditionally made of bamboo) to send the air in a small jerk. This jolt then creates a vibration that produces a characteristic "boing" sound as the air inside the tube vibrates. The length of the tube determines the pitch (how high or low the note is). By creating a set and varying the length of the tubes, you have created an instrument with a musical scale. We ditched the bamboo and made the tembos out of stainless steel, which we tune to the pentatonic in C major. A stylish support structure holds the six stainless steel tubes in vertical alignment, with the tallest being over 3m high, creating a truly visually and audibly stunning experience. Our outdoor interactive tembos are both mesmerizing and addictive, allowing you to make surprisingly funky music simply by hitting them with the dense, closed-cell neoprene foam paddles. Alternatively, you can use your traditional flip-flops! Why Tembo? Well, the shape of the instruments reminded us of elephant trunks and thus became the inspiration for the name Tembo, which means "elephant" in Swahili.
